Abstract:
Patients with anatomic or functional asplenia are at a significantly risk of overwhelming infection particularly involving the encapsulated bacteria S.pneumoniae, H. influenzae and N. meningitidis. Preventive strategies includes a combination of immunization, antibiotic prophylaxis and education. We draw up a recommendation for the prevention and treatment of infection in children with an absent or dysfunctional spleen.
