History

The origins of the journal reach back to 1997, when prof. Jerzy Socha, Clinical Director of Children’s Health Memorial Institute in Warsaw, initiated a creation of clinical guidelines for the management of the main pathologies and diseases treated at the Institute. The publication was intended for internal use and its aim was to standardize patients’ management at the largest pediatric hospital in Poland. The monography was titled “Standardy Medyczne” and was published in autumn of 1997. It was prepared and edited by associate professors dr Joanna Teyseyre, dr Piotr Socha and dr Mieczysław Litwin. It was an extensive volume, covering the pathologies most commonly encountered at the Children’s Health Memorial Institute. However, it was an internal document and was not easily available for physicians from other hospitals. Moreover, it did not cover the whole spectrum of pediatric disorders and was written only by authors from the Institute. The experience and the positive reception inspired the editors to continue the project.

Several months following the original publication, the “Standardy Medyczne Pediatria” journal was founded. It published papers written by the most renowned specialists and was available for all Polish pediatricians. The journal was strongly supported by prof. Jerzy Socha and the Director of The Children’s Health Memorial Institute, prof. Paweł Januszewicz, who both joined the editorial team.

The first volumes of the journal contained clinical guidelines, recommendations and review articles. After several years “Standardy Medyczne Pediatria” started publishing original papers and case reports and the journal’s editorial team grew.

“Standardy Medyczne Pediatria” remains associated with The Children’s Health Memorial Institute in Warsaw, however the journal closely collaborates with pediatric specialists from other centers in Poland, as well as with authors from abroad. From a small journal edited by two associate professors, “Standardy Medyczne Pediatria” grew to become a pediatric journal with one of the widest reaches in Poland, an editorial team consisting of several specialists, international associates, and a large number of collaborating reviewers.
